Wild Wisdom offers animal-led botanical therapy, using applied zoopharmacognosy techniques

The word zoopharmacognosy comes from the Greek roots zoo (“animal”), pharma (“drug”), and cognosy (“knowing”). It refers to a natural behaviour where animals use their innate ability to select specific plants or minerals to help treat internal imbalances, illness, or parasite infestations. In a session, a therapist presents a range of botanicals—such as dried herbs, essential oils, and hydrosols—for the animal to self-select based on its own needs.

Sessions include a careful curation of botanicals
These include essential oils, highly nutritional plant powders, herbal macerates (oil-based extracts) and hydrosols. Using their powerful sense of smell, the animal determines which items they wish to interact with, and based on my deep understanding of the animals responses, I facilitate their use—whether through inhalation, ingestion, or topical application.
Many pet owners try to give their animals what they believe is best, but even natural supplements may not meet the animal’s specific needs at the right time. Applied zoopharmacognosy demonstates to us how, given the choice – animals naturally seek out only a few botanicals at a time, in specific amounts, depending on what they need in that moment. Pre-mixed blends that aim to be a “catch-all” solution are often ineffective or wasteful, and may not provide what the animal truly requires.
A typical session lasts around two hours and usually begins with offering plant-based nutrients, helping to identify which issue the animal wants to address first. From there, I introduce a selection of essential oils and hydrosols that may support healing in areas such as pain relief, digestive health, nutritional deficiencies, parasite control, inflammation, or emotional recovery from past trauma. The animal’s choices guide the session, allowing them to intuitively select what they need to support their own well-being.
Although zoopharmacognosy can be applied to a wide range of animals, I specialise in working with dogs. I’ve supported many owners who were new to this approach and often amazed by the results—sometimes seeing noticeable changes after just one session.
I offer in-person consultations in St Leonards-on-Sea and surrounding areas (within a 25-mile radius), as well as online sessions.
What clients say
I can fully endorse the remarkable techniques that Liz Parry utilised whilst ‘treating’ my animals with essential oils and powders. Liz took a lot of time understanding which oils and powders suited each animal, in this instance, two Labrador dogs and aging Hanoverian Horse. She also showed me how to apply the same techniques in carefully presenting the oils and powders to the animals explaining what each represented and how to read their responses. Liz assisted in the care of my terminal Labrador who was diagnosed with spleen cancer – helping to keep her notably more comfortable, with a quality and extension of life that we were all surprised by.

Since having the treatment with Liz, our terrie Millie is a changed creature! She’s calmer and so much less aggressive with other dogs, is more content falling asleep in a relaxed position rather than curled up and hiding, she eagerly wants snuggles and seems so much happier in herself being notably less anxious. In addition her raw rash across her tummy is no longer angry, hot and red and her skin isn’t calmly and sweaty to touch. Thank you Liz!

The first time Liz worked with my border terrier – Syd, he had excessive thirst, was urinating in the house and seemed slightly depressed. He responded really well to the oils which he selected and his issues improved quickly after the first session and with the top up oils she left with us. The zoopharmacognosy process was new to me, but I have found it fascinating, and it has certainly helped. Liz offers a professional and caring service that is also very informative. Highly recommended!
